Winter at the Lake of the Ozarks

Winter at the Lake

November and December are lively months at the Lake of the Ozarks. The entire community gathers together to celebrate the winter holidays, which creates a festive atmosphere in the area. Millions of holiday lights twinkle through the night as gentle snowfall blankets the ground. Holiday shoppers can find every item on their list at either the Factory Outlet Village or any of the numerous specialty shops in the area. Holiday treats such as fudge, fruitcake, and Christmas cookies are on hand at Harry & David's and Ozark Maid Candies. The area features several holiday concerts, plays, and other special events to light up the season.

Bald eagles come the Lake in November to nest for the winter. These beautiful birds can often be spotted by a dam, where there is open water and a plentiful supply of fish. Ducks also visit the area in the winter months. The blue-wing and green-wing teals are frequent visitors, although goldeneyes, wigeons, and wood ducks can also be found here. Other winter birds include purple finches, white-crowned sparrows, fox sparrows, red-breasted nuthatches and yellow-bellied sapsuckers. A rare bird to watch out for is the large trumpeter swan. These birds generally only make it this far south during the coldest winters.

After the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, January and February offer a chance to relax. These months are quiet, renewing, and comforting. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere with a soothing massage, an afternoon nap on a cozy sofa, a good book by a crackling fire, or a candlelit dinner and some soft music. Keep in mind that most of our homes at the Lake of the Ozarks feature fireplaces for your comfort!
